The Inns of Court Victoria is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a 2-hour in person seminar on the topic of “Estate Planning, Real Estate Transactions and Civil Litigation: some considerations from a family law point of view.

Panelists:

  1. Michelle Kinney –  Ms. Kinney is the founder of Michelle Kinney Law.  She focuses her practice on family building and fertility law.  Ms. Kinney was one of the architects of the British Columbia Family Law Act. She is accredited as a Family Law Mediator and a Family Law Arbitrator by the BC Law Society. She is recognized as an expert in her areas of law and is a regular presenter and contributor to a range of education materials on family law, law reform, family violence and parentage / fertility law.
  2. Christine Murray: Ms. Murray is a partner at Cassels Murray Family and Estates Law.  Her practice focuses on family law, mediation and fertility law.  Ms. Murray is accredited as a Family Law Mediator and Arbitrator by the BC Law Society.

Topic:

The panelists will be discussing topics of family law that are relevant to other legal practitioners including:

  • Real estate transactions: Implications of real estate transactions in the application of the property division provisions of the Family Law Act;
  • Previous legal files and how their contents may be relevant evidence in a family law matter (i.e. gift letters, damage settlement breakdown, land transfer documents); and
  • Estate planning and how the transfer of assets to adult children could result in the property becoming divisible as family property under the Family Law Act.

Please note there will be prizes for audience participation.  The panelists welcome your questions by e-mail in advance so they can consider them and speak to them in their presentation.

Professional Development Credits: This course offers up to 2 hours of Professional Development Credits (See “How to get PD Credit” below).

When:  Wednesday, January 25, 2023

Time: Doors open at 4:30pm in the afternoon. Check–in is between 4:30pm and 5:00pm.

Buffet supper commences at 5:10pm. The program begins at 5:30pm and ends at 7:30pm.

Location: Sticky Wicket Pub, Upstairs called the “Maple Room”

Cost: The cost of the event is $55.00 per person (includes buffet meal) paid to the “Victoria Bar Association”

How to get PD Credit

To get the 2 PD Credits, this is the process after the event has completed:

  1. Find Law Society “Member Services”
  2. Select “Member Portal” and enter your information
  3. ‘Login’
  4. Under “Education” select “Continuing Professional Development (CPD)”
  5. Type the group study name of “Inns of Court” into the “Course/Group Study” name box (leave dates out as this is set up with a date range)
  6. In the Course/Group Study box type in “Inns of Court”
  7. From the Drop down menu select “Inns of Court – Victoria”
  8. Select “Inns of Court Victoria Court (36 Credits) Jan.1 – December 31, 2023” or something similar as the name is undergoing a slight change.
  9. DO NOT TYPE IN THE NAME OF THIS COURSE WHEN APPLYING FOR CREDITS. YOU WILL NOT FIND IT. YOU DO NOT NEED THE NAME IN ORDER TO CLAIM YOUR 2 HOURS OF CREDIT
  10. Under “Record your CPD hours” type ‘2’
  11. Under “Completion Date” type in the date you took the course
  12. Select the “Get Credit” Button
