DESCRIPTION:On March 3\, 2023\, the Law Society of BC released the agenda for the next Bencher meeting on March 10\, 2023. The agenda contains a motion of considerable significance: asking government to bring into force the licensed paralegal amendments to the Legal Professions Act: \n\nBe It Resolved That:\n\n\nthe Law Society request that the licensed paralegal amendments to the Legal Profession Act and the related transitional provisions in Bill 57 – 2018 Attorney General Statutes Amendment Act\, 2018 be brought into force; and\nin anticipation of the amendments being brought into force\, the Executive Director is directed to take the necessary steps to provide for the licensing of paralegals\, including the development of processes and procedures and proposing to the Benchers any required changes to the Law Society Rules consistent with the authority provided in the amendments once granted.\n\nYour Victoria County Benchers\, Lindsay Leblanc and Paul Pearson\, want to report in about the motion\, express our current views on it\, and receive feedback from the Victoria Bar. \nPlease join us in person at the courthouse Barristers’ Lounge Wednesday\, March 8 at 12:00-1:00 PM\, 5th floor\, 850 Burdett Street to discuss. \nTo attend electronically please email paul.pearson@gov.bc.ca with the subject line “Meeting link”.

DESCRIPTION:The Inns of Court Victoria is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a 2-hour in person seminar on the topic of “Tips and Tricks for Building a Resilient Legal Career”. \nPanelists: \nDel Friday (she/her) serves as the Legal Community Liaison & Educator at the Courthouse Library. \nMs. Friday is a practicing wills & estates lawyer with over 20 years of experience. She leads the Library’s Training & Outreach Program and loves to connect lawyers\, notaries\, court advocates\, and other legal professionals to the legal resources and training offered at the library. \nClare Asquith Finegan (she/her) serves as the Librarian for the New Westminster Courthouse Library. \nMs. Finegan graduated from UBC in 2016 with a Master of Library and Information Studies. Since 2018\, Ms. Finegan has worked as a Client Services Librarian with CLBC\, assisting the public and the legal community with finding and using legal information. She has worked various jobs in the arts\, service industry\, and many things in between\, but her primary interest has always been to help people to navigate the barriers that stop them from accessing the information they need. \nTopic: \nThe panelists will be discussing about Tips and Tricks for Building a Resilient Legal Career. \nIn the last three years\, your legal career has survived a sudden shift to virtual work\, heat dome\, wildfires\, floods\, a frenzied housing market\, inflation\, and rising interest rates. \nHow can you prepare your career for the next threat? \nDuring this interactive workshop\, you will learn how to use legal research tools and collaborative problem-solving methods to create a more resilient practice. SUMMARY:Battle of the Bar Bands
DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n  \nThe Battle of the Bar Bands will be held March 31\, 2023 at the Da Vinci Centre\, at 195 Bay St. Six local bands made up of local lawyers and law students will play their hearts out in front of a panel of real judges (one from the Supreme Court\, one from the Provincial Court and celebrity Judge\, Times Colonist columnist JACK KNOX). The best band will be awarded the coveted Battle of the Bar Bands Trophy!  As in years’ past\, there will also be a mini-competition where bands perform the music of a featured artist. This year’s featured artist is the Rolling Stones. \n  \nDoors open at 6pm. The Greek on the Street food truck will be right outside the front door with delicious Greek food throughout the event so plan on having dinner and snacks there. \n  \nThe first band starts playing at 7pm sharp! “Twist of Fate Cocktails” will be serving drinks until 11pm. \n  \nTickets \n  \nSponsorship Tables are available for $500: these come with 8 tickets and two bottles of wine for the table.  To purchase a sponsorship table\, please contact Tara McDonald at battleofthebarbands@gmail.com. \n  \nIndividual tickets may also be purchased for $35\, or $25 for students.
