SUMMARY:Update on the Legal Professions Act
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE OF VICTORIA MEETING \nMAY 27\, 2024 – WITH \nTHE LAW SOCIETY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA PRESIDENT AND CEO \nThe Government of British Columbia has tabled Bill 21\, which will eliminate the Law Society.  The Law Society and many who are aware of the changes being enacted\, believe the current version of the legislation is not in the best interests of British Columbians and reflects a profound change in how a critical component of our democracy functions.  Lawyers must be independent of Government to effectively advocate for all those who government impacts. \nCome meet the Law Society President Jeevyn Dhaliwal K.C. and CEO Don Avison K.C. to discuss: \n\nWhat is the effect of eliminating the Law Society and replacing it with the Legal Professions Act?\nHow does Bill 21 fail to ensure that lawyers are independent of government?\nHow does Bill 21 fail to ensure that lawyers are self regulated?\nHow much will the fees and liability risks to lawyers increase?\nWhat is the Law Society planning in response if Bill 21 passes.\n\nA discussion on why litigation challenging this legislation appears inevitable.\n\n\n\nMeeting: \n\nMay 27\, 2024\n4 pm to 5:30 pm \nThe Union Club of British Columbia\n\nin the Begbie Lounge\n805 Gordon Street\, Victoria\, B.C\n\n\n(limited refreshments provided)\n\nAny questions please contact Lindsay LeBlanc K.C. or James A.S.
