DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Bar Association (“VBA”) is grateful to Sean Finn\, Monique Dull and JA Pankiw-Petty for hosting a dinner series for articled students and junior lawyers with up to five (5) years of practice regarding issues of professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. \nThese sessions are designed to be “roundtable” discussions with senior lawyers acting as facilitators rather than lecturing on these topics. Articled students and junior counsel gain a forum within which to discuss the challenges that arise in our day-to-day practice as well as hear how others deal with these sometimes difficult and stressful issues. \nMembers of the bench generously attend to comment and Pinder Cheema\, K.C.\, kindly co-chairs when available. \nBefore the first session\, learners will be provided with a copy of Chief Justice McEachern’s paper (updated by Michael Goldie\, K.C.\, and others)\, Ethical and Professional Responsibility Issues. DESCRIPTION:2023 Inns of Court Series – Professionalism and Ethics for Junior Counsel – Hosted by Sean Finn Featuring Various Local Jurists \nThe Victoria Bar Association (“VBA”) is grateful to Sean Finn and Monique Dull for hosting a dinner series for articled students and junior lawyers with less than five (5) years of practice regarding issues of professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. \nThese sessions are designed to be “roundtable” discussions with senior lawyers acting as facilitators rather than lecturing on these topics. The intention is to give articled students and junior counsel a forum within which to discuss the challenges that arise in our day-to-day practice as well as hear how others deal with these sometimes difficult and stressful issues. \nAt the beginning of the program\, learners will be provided with a copy of Chief Justice McEachern’s 2003 paper Ethical and Professional Responsibilities. Each session will focus on a different chapter from this paper. \nDates \nThis year\, we will host two sessions in the spring and two more in the fall on the following dates between 5PM and 7PM: \n\nTuesday\, April 18th\, 2023\nTuesday\, May 16th\, 2023\nTuesday\, October 17th\, 2023\nTuesday\, November 14th\, 2023\n\nLocation \nThe Barristers’ Lounge in the 5th floor courthouse library located at 850 Burdett Street. \nCost \nThis program will be offered at no cost to articled students and junior lawyers with less than five (5) years of practice who are members of the VBA. DESCRIPTION:The Inns of Court Victoria is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a 2-hour in person seminar on the topic of “Tips and Tricks for Building a Resilient Legal Career”. \nPanelists: \nDel Friday (she/her) serves as the Legal Community Liaison & Educator at the Courthouse Library. \nMs. Friday is a practicing wills & estates lawyer with over 20 years of experience. She leads the Library’s Training & Outreach Program and loves to connect lawyers\, notaries\, court advocates\, and other legal professionals to the legal resources and training offered at the library. \nClare Asquith Finegan (she/her) serves as the Librarian for the New Westminster Courthouse Library. \nMs. Finegan graduated from UBC in 2016 with a Master of Library and Information Studies. Since 2018\, Ms. Finegan has worked as a Client Services Librarian with CLBC\, assisting the public and the legal community with finding and using legal information. She has worked various jobs in the arts\, service industry\, and many things in between\, but her primary interest has always been to help people to navigate the barriers that stop them from accessing the information they need. \nTopic: \nThe panelists will be discussing about Tips and Tricks for Building a Resilient Legal Career. \nIn the last three years\, your legal career has survived a sudden shift to virtual work\, heat dome\, wildfires\, floods\, a frenzied housing market\, inflation\, and rising interest rates. \nHow can you prepare your career for the next threat? \nDuring this interactive workshop\, you will learn how to use legal research tools and collaborative problem-solving methods to create a more resilient practice.
