DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Bar Association’s Inns of Court (CPD) education program is pleased to announce that it will be hosting this 2-hour in person seminar\, and donating any profits to a local Indigenous organization. \nKilslay Kaaji Sding Miles Richardson\, OC\, a renowned leader and advocate whose work over four decades has significantly advanced Indigenous nationhood\, self-determination\, and reconciliation. This important discussion will be moderated by Jacquelyn E. Miller\, a lawyer specializing in Aboriginal Law with a strong background in Indigenous governance and intergovernmental relations. \nKey Topics: \n\nThe foundational connection between Indigenous governance and effective relationships with the Crown and business sectors.\nInsights into the legal and strategic challenges in navigating litigation from a Nation’s perspective\, including in his own representation of his Nation in court and as a leader and mentor in the Haida landmark Duty to Consult case and their title claim.\nReflections on the journey toward the Haida Title Agreement\, offering a path forward in recognizing Indigenous land rights.\nGuidance for legal practitioners on engaging meaningfully with Indigenous clients and communities\, and on the profession’s responsibilities in reconciliation.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Kilslay Kaaji Sding Miles Richardson\, OC\nA citizen of the Haida Nation\, Mr. Richardson became the youngest President of the Council of the Haida Nation in 1984\, holding this role until 1996. During his tenure\, he spearheaded the drafting of the Constitution of the Haida Nation\, the development of Haida land and marine use plans under Haida law\, and the historic Gwaii Haanas Agreement—the first Nation-to-Nation agreement between the Haida Nation and Canada. \nMr. Richardson played a pivotal role as a member of the BC Claims Task Force\, contributing to the establishment of the BC Treaty Commission (“BCTC”) and serving as its Commissioner and Chief Commissioner. In 2007\, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is a founding Director of the David Suzuki Foundation and a Director of the National Consortium on Indigenous Economic Development. He continues his impactful work through his governance and government relations advisory practice. \n  \nAbout the Moderator: Jacquelyn E. Miller\nJacquie Miller is a settler of northwestern European heritage who has spent most of her life on Coast Salish territories\, now residing in Victoria. Called to the bar in 2023\, she brings a wealth of experience from a career that includes working with the Government of the Northwest Territories\, Indigenous governance think tanks\, and as a consultant supporting Nations and Indigenous organizations. She has collaborated closely with Mr. Richardson since 2012. \nA graduate of the University of Victoria’s unique JD/JID program\, Jacquie now teaches Transsystemic Legal Processes\, Research\, and Writing in that program while practicing Aboriginal law at Cascadia Legal LLP.
