SUMMARY:Inns of Court - Transitioning to Family Law (or Refreshing Your Knowledge)
DESCRIPTION:﻿  \nThe Inns of Court Victoria is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a 2 hour in-person seminar on the topic of Transitioning to Family Law (or Refreshing Your Knowledge of Family Law). \nTheme: \nFamily lawyers Emma Neary and Erin Shaw will be presenting on Transitioning to Family Law (or Refreshing Your Knowledge of Family Law)\, with an eye to providing a good foundation in current law and practice in family law for lawyers who are considering or already in the process of transitioning to family law from other areas of practice\, such as personal injury. The session will cover topics including mandatory family violence screening\, recent legislative changes\, advice for working with families going through the difficult and often emotional process of family structuring. The seminar will also provide a refresher for those who have previously practiced family law or for those whose practice involves the confluence between family law and other areas of legal practice. \nSpeakers: \nEmma is an experienced family law lawyer who practices as Horne Coupar LLP. Emma provides services in all areas of family law with a special interest in assisting clients with asset/wealth preservation and estate planning through prenuptial or cohabitation agreements. She provides practical solutions for her clients in issues of divorce\, division of property\, spousal support or alimony\, parenting\, child support\, and in drafting separation agreements. Emma is a Collaborative Law Professional who assists parties in reaching settlement out of court through collaborative law\, negotiation\, and mediation. She also has extensive experience in litigation and arbitration. \nErin Shaw is a family lawyer and mediator with 30 years of experience in the private\, public\, and non-profit sectors. She works to make the justice system more accessible and user friendly\, including through offering unbundled services to help clients with discrete steps in the resolution of their matters. She served as Director of the BC Ministry of Justice’s Dispute Resolution Office\, and has worked as a private consultant on access to justice and law reform\, and has contributed to the development of family law legislation and court rules\, as well as alternative dispute resolution processes\, aimed at making the family justice system easier to navigate. She is the legal reviewer and a writer for the Legal Services Society Family Justice website\, BC’s main family law website. \nContinuing Professional Development Credits: \nThis course offers up to 2 hours of Continuing Professional Development Credits (See “How to get CPD Credit” below). \nDate: Wednesday\, February 28\, 2024 \nTime: Doors open at 4:30pm in the afternoon. DESCRIPTION:﻿Call for Participants – Inns of Court: Victoria – Wednesday\, January 31\, 2024 @ 4:30-7:30 pm \n  \nThe Inns of Court Victoria is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a 2 hour in-person seminar on the topic of intellectual property protection\, including copyright\, patents\, trademarks\, industrial designs\, trade secrets and the interplay amongst these different types of intellectual property. \n  \nTheme: \nIntellectual property lawyers James Ramsbottom and Alistair Forster will be presenting an overview intellectual property protection with relevant considerations to practitioners in the legal field.  The presentation will provide information on the various types of intellectual property protection\, including copyright\, patents\, trademarks\, industrial designs\, and trade secrets and how each of these interplay in the formation of an intellectual property portfolio.  With regard to each of each of these forms of intellectual property\, timelines for engaging the system will be discussed and general considerations will be provided to advise clients of when and how to engage the system to maximize the value from their inventions\, trade presence\, and technical know-how. \n  \nSpeakers: \nJames Ramsbottom and Alistair Forster\, partners of the firm Merizzi Ramsbottom & Forster\, will be conducting the presentation. James Ramsbottom developed an interest in intellectual property as a doctoral student in molecular pharmacology\, and has since worked with scientists and engineers in a range of disciplines. He is also the inventor of several Canadian and American patents and the author of peer-reviewed scientific publications. Alistair Forster is a chemical-engineer-turned-lawyer\, who spent years working in the development and testing of medical devices before working in intellectual property law and developing hands-on experience with patents and patent litigation.
