Topic: Artificial Intelligence and Civil Liability
Date: Wednesday, April 22, 2026 – 5:00pm to 7:30pm
CPD: 2 hours of credit
Location: Maple Room – Sticky Wicket Pub (food provided)
Topic: Artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded in everyday decision-making, generating predictions, recommendations, and automated actions that affect individuals and organizations. While these technologies offer significant benefits, they also create new risks when errors or failures cause harm to persons or property. Tort law faces new challenges when autonomous or semi-autonomous systems play a causal role in harmful events, raising complex questions about responsibility, causation, and legal accountability. In response to these emerging issues, the British Columbia Law Institute launched its Artificial Intelligence and Civil Liability Project in 2021 to examine how the common law of tort may need to evolve to provide fair remedies for AI-related harm. At this session, the report’s authors will discuss the project’s key findings and present several of its law reform recommendations, drawing on the work of an interdisciplinary committee and extensive stakeholder consultation.
