Call for Participants – Inns of Court: Victoria – Wednesday, January 31, 2024 @ 4:30-7:30 pm
The Inns of Court Victoria is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a 2 hour in-person seminar on the topic of intellectual property protection, including copyright, patents, trademarks, industrial designs, trade secrets and the interplay amongst these different types of intellectual property.
Theme:
Intellectual property lawyers James Ramsbottom and Alistair Forster will be presenting an overview intellectual property protection with relevant considerations to practitioners in the legal field. The presentation will provide information on the various types of intellectual property protection, including copyright, patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and trade secrets and how each of these interplay in the formation of an intellectual property portfolio. With regard to each of each of these forms of intellectual property, timelines for engaging the system will be discussed and general considerations will be provided to advise clients of when and how to engage the system to maximize the value from their inventions, trade presence, and technical know-how.
Speakers:
James Ramsbottom and Alistair Forster, partners of the firm Merizzi Ramsbottom & Forster, will be conducting the presentation. James Ramsbottom developed an interest in intellectual property as a doctoral student in molecular pharmacology, and has since worked with scientists and engineers in a range of disciplines. He is also the inventor of several Canadian and American patents and the author of peer-reviewed scientific publications. Alistair Forster is a chemical-engineer-turned-lawyer, who spent years working in the development and testing of medical devices before working in intellectual property law and developing hands-on experience with patents and patent litigation. They have worked in the private and public sectors and as in-house counsel, heling clients assess and manage their IP and improve its value.

This course offers up to 2 hours of Continuing Professional Development Credits (See “How to get CPD Credit” below).
Date: Wednesday, January 31, 2024
Time: Doors open at 4:30pm in the afternoon. Check–in is between 4:30pm and 5:00pm. Participants mingle and enjoy refreshments between when doors open and when the program begins. The program begins at 5:30pm and ends at 7:30pm.

Cost: The cost of the event is $55.00 per person (includes dinner) paid to the “Victoria Bar Association”

To get the 2 CPD Credits, this is the process after the event has been completed:
Find Law Society “Member Services”
Select “Member Portal” and enter your information
‘Login’
Under “Education” select “Continuing Professional Development (CPD)”
Type the group study name of “Inns of Court” into the “Course/Group Study” name box (leave dates out as this is set up with a date range)
In the Course/Group Study box type in ‘Inns of Court”
From the Drop down menu select “Inns of Court – Victoria”
Select “Inns of Court Victoria Court (36 Credits) Jan.1 – December 31, 2023” or something similar as the name is undergoing a slight change
